A razor thou must take, and pass it over head and beard both; then weigh thy hair in the scales and make equal portions of it. 2 A third of it thou shalt set alight and burn up within this city of thine, when the days of its besieging are over; a third thou shalt cut to pieces with the blade thou carriest, round about it; and a third thou shalt scatter to the winds, for my unsheathed sword to go in pursuit. 3 Of this last third, gather some few hairs and secure them in the fold of thy cloak; 4 yet even of these take some away and throw them into the heart of the fire, to burn there; fire enough to kindle the whole race of Israel![1] 1 Et tu, fili hominis, sume tibi gladium acutum, radentem pilos, et assumes eum et duces per caput tuum et per barbam tuam, et assumes tibi stateram ponderis et divides eos.
5 τάδε λέγει κύριος αὕτη ἡ Ιερουσαλημ ἐν μέσῳ τῶν ἐθνῶν τέθεικα αὐτὴν καὶ τὰς κύκλῳ αὐτῆς χώρας 6 καὶ ἐρεῖς τὰ δικαιώματά μου τῇ ἀνόμῳ ἐκ τῶν ἐθνῶν καὶ τὰ νόμιμά μου ἐκ τῶν χωρῶν τῶν κύκλῳ αὐτῆς διότι τὰ δικαιώματά μου ἀπώσαντο καὶ ἐν τοῖς νομίμοις μου οὐκ ἐπορεύθησαν ἐν αὐτοῖς 7 διὰ τοῦτο τάδε λέγει κύριος ἀν{Q'} ὧν ἡ ἀφορμὴ ὑμῶν ἐκ τῶν ἐθνῶν τῶν κύκλῳ ὑμῶν καὶ ἐν τοῖς νομίμοις μου οὐκ ἐπορεύθητε καὶ τὰ δικαιώματά μου οὐκ ἐποιήσατε ἀλ{L'} οὐδὲ κατὰ τὰ δικαιώματα τῶν ἐθνῶν τῶν κύκλῳ ὑμῶν οὐ πεποιήκατε 8 διὰ τοῦτο τάδε λέγει κύριος ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐπὶ σὲ καὶ ποιήσω ἐν μέσῳ σου κρίμα ἐνώπιον τῶν ἐθνῶν 9 καὶ ποιήσω ἐν σοὶ ἃ οὐ πεποίηκα καὶ ἃ οὐ ποιήσω ὅμοια αὐτοῖς ἔτι κατὰ πάντα τὰ βδελύγματά σου 10 διὰ τοῦτο πατέρες φάγονται τέκνα ἐν μέσῳ σου καὶ τέκνα φάγονται πατέρας καὶ ποιήσω ἐν σοὶ κρίματα καὶ διασκορπιῶ πάντας τοὺς καταλοίπους σου εἰς πάντα ἄνεμον 5 Look you, says the Lord God, here is Jerusalem, that I have set down at earth’s very midst, the nations all about her, 6 and she has defied my will, than the very heathen more rebellious, defied my commandments, as neighbouring peoples never did. My bidding they have cast to the winds, followed never where my commandments led. 7 All your neighbours, the Lord God says, outdone in wickedness, my paths untrodden, my bidding unheeded! False even to the heathen traditions of yonder country-side! 8 Have at thee, says the Lord God; in thy very heart I will execute judgement for all the world to see; 9 such punishment I will inflict as never was before, never shall be again, for thy detestable doings. 10 Men’s flesh men shall eat, father of son and son of father; then, when my sentence is executed, I will scatter all that is left of thee to the four winds.
11 διὰ τοῦτο ζῶ ἐγώ λέγει κύριος εἰ μὴ ἀν{Q'} ὧν τὰ ἅγιά μου ἐμίανας ἐν πᾶσιν τοῖς βδελύγμασίν σου κἀγὼ ἀπώσομαί σε οὐ φείσεταί μου ὁ ὀφθαλμός κἀγὼ οὐκ ἐλεήσω 12 τὸ τέταρτόν σου ἐν θανάτῳ ἀναλωθήσεται καὶ τὸ τέταρτόν σου ἐν λιμῷ συντελεσθήσεται ἐν μέσῳ σου καὶ τὸ τέταρτόν σου εἰς πάντα ἄνεμον σκορπιῶ αὐτούς καὶ τὸ τέταρτόν σου ἐν ῥομφαίᾳ πεσοῦνται κύκλῳ σου καὶ μάχαιραν ἐκκενώσω ὀπίσω αὐτῶν 13 καὶ συντελεσθήσεται ὁ θυμός μου καὶ ἡ ὀργή μου ἐ{P'} αὐτούς καὶ ἐπιγνώσῃ διότι ἐγὼ κύριος λελάληκα ἐν ζήλῳ μου ἐν τῷ συντελέσαι με τὴν ὀργήν μου ἐ{P'} αὐτούς 14 καὶ θήσομαί σε εἰς ἔρημον καὶ τὰς θυγατέρας σου κύκλῳ σου ἐνώπιον παντὸς διοδεύοντος 15 καὶ ἔσῃ στενακτὴ καὶ δηλαϊστὴ ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν τοῖς κύκλῳ σου ἐν τῷ ποιῆσαί με ἐν σοὶ κρίματα ἐν ἐκδικήσει θυμοῦ μου ἐγὼ κύριος λελάληκα 16 ἐν τῷ ἐξαποστεῖλαί με τὰς βολίδας μου τοῦ λιμοῦ ἐ{P'} αὐτοὺς καὶ ἔσονται εἰς ἔκλειψιν καὶ συντρίψω στήριγμα ἄρτου σου 17 καὶ ἐξαποστελῶ ἐπὶ σὲ λιμὸν καὶ θηρία πονηρὰ καὶ τιμωρήσομαί σε καὶ θάνατος καὶ αἷμα διελεύσονται ἐπὶ σέ καὶ ῥομφαίαν ἐπάξω ἐπὶ σὲ κυκλόθεν ἐγὼ κύριος λελάληκα 11 As I am a living God, the Lord says, since thou hast not scrupled to profane my sanctuary with vile things and detestable things a many, I will make havoc of thee, and my eye shall not melt with pity; I will not scruple in my turn. 12 A third of thy sons shall die of pestilence, or with famine pine away; a third shall fall in thy defence; a third I will scatter to the four winds, and my sword unsheathed in pursuit. 13 And at last, my anger spent, my vengeance glutted, my grief healed, doubt they shall not that the God whom they slighted has decreed it; my sentence shall take full toll of them. 14 Desolate, and the scorn of thy neighbours, so every passer-by shall see thee. 15 A name of scorn and reproach, a by-word thou shalt be and a thing of horror, to all the nations about thee, when thy punishment is done, so fierce the anger, so shrewd the blow; 16 I, the Lord, have decreed it. Hungry arrows[2] of mine shall fly abroad, dolorous and deadly, for your minishing; famine that grows worse and worse as the stocks of bread fail, 17 and with the famine wild beasts to bereave you, visitations of plague and violent death; and the sword too, I will let loose upon you; I, the Lord, have decreed it. 11 Idcirco vivo ego, dicit Dominus Deus, nisi pro eo quod sanctum meum violasti in omnibus offensionibus tuis et in cunctis abominationibus tuis, ego quoque confringam: et non parcet oculus meus, et non miserebor. Ego Dominus locutus sum.
