1 καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ἑνδεκάτῳ ἔτει ἐν τῷ δωδεκάτῳ μηνὶ μιᾷ τοῦ μηνὸς ἐγένετο λόγος κυρίου πρός με λέγων 2 υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου λαβὲ θρῆνον ἐπὶ Φαραω βασιλέα Αἰγύπτου καὶ ἐρεῖς αὐτῷ λέοντι ἐθνῶν ὡμοιώθης καὶ σὺ ὡς δράκων ὁ ἐν τῇ θαλάσσῃ καὶ ἐκεράτιζες τοῖς ποταμοῖς σου καὶ ἐτάρασσες ὕδωρ τοῖς ποσίν σου καὶ κατεπάτεις τοὺς ποταμούς σου 3 τάδε λέγει κύριος καὶ περιβαλῶ ἐπὶ σὲ δίκτυα λαῶν πολλῶν καὶ ἀνάξω σε ἐν τῷ ἀγκίστρῳ μου 4 καὶ ἐκτενῶ σε ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν πεδία πλησθήσεταί σου καὶ ἐπικαθιῶ ἐπὶ σὲ πάντα τὰ πετεινὰ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ ἐμπλήσω ἐκ σοῦ πάντα τὰ θηρία πάσης τῆς γῆς 5 καὶ δώσω τὰς σάρκας σου ἐπὶ τὰ ὄρη καὶ ἐμπλήσω ἀπὸ τοῦ αἵματός σου 6 καὶ ποτισθήσεται ἡ γῆ ἀπὸ τῶν προχωρημάτων σου ἀπὸ τοῦ πλήθους σου ἐπὶ τῶν ὀρέων φάραγγας ἐμπλήσω ἀπὸ σοῦ 1 And in the twelfth year, on the first day of the twelfth month, word came to me from the Lord: 2 Son of man, sing a dirge for Pharao, the king of Egypt, that counts for a lion among the nations: Monster thou art of the depths, holding up thy head in those rivers of thine, trampling them under foot, till their waters run foul! 3 This doom the Lord God pronounces: A net-work I have of many peoples that I will cast over thee, a seine that will bring thee presently ashore. 4 High on the beach I will leave thee aground, for all the birds to perch on thee, all the beasts to take their fill of thee; 5 flesh of thine shall strew the mountains, with blood of thine the gullies shall overflow, 6 reeking blood that drenches hill and chokes valley with its stream.

3
Propterea hæc dicit Dominus Deus:
Expandam super te rete meum in multitudine populorum multorum,
et extraham te in sagena mea.
4
Et projiciam te in terram;
super faciem agri abjiciam te:
et habitare faciam super te omnia volatilia cæli,
et saturabo de te bestias universæ terræ.
5
Et dabo carnes tuas super montes,
et implebo colles tuos sanie tua.
6
Et irrigabo terram fœtore sanguinis tui super montes,
et valles implebuntur ex te.
7 καὶ κατακαλύψω ἐν τῷ σβεσθῆναί σε οὐρανὸν καὶ συσκοτάσω τὰ ἄστρα αὐτοῦ ἥλιον ἐν νεφέλῃ καλύψω καὶ σελήνη οὐ μὴ φάνῃ τὸ φῶς αὐτῆς 8 πάντα τὰ φαίνοντα φῶς ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ συσκοτάσουσιν ἐπὶ σέ καὶ δώσω σκότος ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν σου λέγει κύριος κύριος 7 Thy light when I quench, muffled the skies shall be, the stars dim, the sun beclouded, and the moon shall refuse her light; 8 no luminary in heaven but shall go mourning for thee, and in that land of thine, the Lord God says, all shall be darkness. 7
Et operiam, cum extinctus fueris, cælum,
et nigrescere faciam stellas ejus:
solem nube tegam,
et luna non dabit lumen suum.
8
Omnia luminaria cæli mœrere faciam super te,
et dabo tenebras super terram tuam,
dicit Dominus Deus,
cum ceciderint vulnerati tui in medio terræ,
ait Dominus Deus.
9 καὶ παροργιῶ καρδίαν λαῶν πολλῶν ἡνίκα ἂν ἄγω αἰχμαλωσίαν σου εἰς τὰ ἔθνη εἰς γῆν ἣν οὐκ ἔγνως 10 καὶ στυγνάσουσιν ἐπὶ σὲ ἔθνη πολλά καὶ οἱ βασιλεῖς αὐτῶν ἐκστάσει ἐκστήσονται ἐν τῷ πέτασθαι τὴν ῥομφαίαν μου ἐπὶ πρόσωπα αὐτῶν προσδεχόμενοι τὴν πτῶσιν αὐτῶν ἀ{F'} ἡμέρας πτώσεώς σου 11 ὅτι τάδε λέγει κύριος ῥομφαία βασιλέως Βαβυλῶνος ἥξει σοι 12 ἐν μαχαίραις γιγάντων καὶ καταβαλῶ τὴν ἰσχύν σου λοιμοὶ ἀπὸ ἐθνῶν πάντες καὶ ἀπολοῦσι τὴν ὕβριν Αἰγύπτου καὶ συντριβήσεται πᾶσα ἡ ἰσχὺς αὐτῆς 13 καὶ ἀπολῶ πάντα τὰ κτήνη αὐτῆς ἀ{F'} ὕδατος πολλοῦ καὶ οὐ μὴ ταράξῃ αὐτὸ ἔτι ποὺς ἀνθρώπου καὶ ἴχνος κτηνῶν οὐ μὴ καταπατήσῃ αὐτό 14 οὕτως τότε ἡσυχάσει τὰ ὕδατα αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ ποταμοὶ αὐτῶν ὡς ἔλαιον πορεύσονται λέγει κύριος 15 ὅταν δῶ Αἴγυπτον εἰς ἀπώλειαν καὶ ἐρημωθῇ ἡ γῆ σὺν τῇ πληρώσει αὐτῆς ὅταν διασπείρω πάντας τοὺς κατοικοῦντας ἐν αὐτῇ καὶ γνώσονται ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι κύριος 16 θρῆνός ἐστιν καὶ θρηνήσεις αὐτόν καὶ αἱ θυγατέρες τῶν ἐθνῶν θρηνήσουσιν αὐτόν ἐ{P'} Αἴγυπτον καὶ ἐπὶ πᾶσαν τὴν ἰσχὺν αὐτῆς θρηνήσουσιν αὐτήν λέγει κύριος κύριος 9 Here shall be a challenge to many nations, in lands thou still knowest not, when I tell them the story of thy downfall; 10 peoples a many there shall be that gape in bewilderment, kings that tremble and quake at the story of thee. My sword they shall see flashing before their eyes, and each for his own life shall tremble in the day of thy fall. 11 Sword of the king of Babylon shall reach thee, the Lord God says; 12 tried warriors thy thronging multitudes shall cut down, pitiless hordes that shall harry the pride of Egypt, scatter her wealth. 13 The very beasts that roam beside your full stream I will destroy; never foot of man, hoof of beast shall sully it thenceforward; 14 clear those waters shall be as never they were, smooth as oil the river’s flow, the Lord God says; 15 all Egypt, now, shall be desolate, all its busy life shall be still, when I smite the men that dwell in it, and teach them to recognize my power. 16 Make dole, then; here is good cause; Egypt shall have the world for her mourner, none but shall mourn for Egypt and her lost greatness, says the Lord God. 9
Et irritabo cor populorum multorum,
cum induxero contritionem tuam in gentibus super terras quas nescis.
10
11
Quia hæc dicit Dominus Deus:
Gladius regis Babylonis veniet tibi.
12
In gladiis fortium dejiciam multitudinem tuam:
inexpugnabiles omnes gentes hæ,
et vastabunt superbiam Ægypti,
et dissipabitur multitudo ejus.
13
Et perdam omnia jumenta ejus,
quæ erant super aquas plurimas:
et non conturbabit eas pes hominis ultra,
neque ungula jumentorum turbabit eas.
14
Tunc purissimas reddam aquas eorum,
et flumina eorum quasi oleum adducam,
ait Dominus Deus,
15
cum dedero terram Ægypti desolatam:
deseretur autem terra a plenitudine sua
quando percussero omnes habitatores ejus:
et scient quia ego Dominus.
16
Planctus est, et plangent eum:
filiæ gentium plangent eum:
super Ægyptum et super multitudinem ejus plangent eum,
ait Dominus Deus.
20 The sword carries off all alike; once loose it, she and all her multitudes must perish. 21 From the tomb they greet the newcomer, those great warriors, men of the uncircumcised races, allies once, that now lie there, slain in battle.[1] 22 Here is the Assyrian king with all his muster-roll; how their graves ring him about, dead warriors all! 23 Down there in the dark, his grave and theirs around him, dead now in battle, that once daunted the hearts of the living! 24 Here are the Elamites, too, lying about their king, men uncircumcised that made themselves feared in life, and now lie in the pit beneath with all those others, stripped and shamed as they were left on the battle-field; 25 (here he lies, with his men about him for monument, once so feared; stripped and shamed they lie, Elamites uncircumcised, there in the dark, there amongst the slain).[2] 26 Uncircumcised, too, the king of Mosoch and Thubal, with all his retinue buried around him, dead now and feared no longer; 27 shall they not sleep on there with the slain warriors, with the uncircumcised, still armed, swords beneath their heads; their corpses lawless yet, and feared no longer?[3] 28 Thy place too, the place of thy slain warriors, is with the uncircumcised in their ruin. 29 King and chief of the Edomites[4] lie slain among the uncircumcised, there in the dark; 30 so do all the kings of the north, and the Sidonians, dismayed now and trusting no more in their own valour, stripped and shamed. 31 Well may Pharao and his men be comforted by that sight over the multitude of their slain, the Lord God says. 32 He too, in this living world, wielded my terrors; he too lies there, the Lord God says, slain in battle, with the uncircumcised about him.

Fili hominis, cane lugubre super multitudinem Ægypti:
19
Quo pulchrior es?
descende, et dormi cum incircumcisis.
20
In medio interfectorum gladio cadent;
gladius datus est:
attraxerunt eam et omnes populos ejus.
21
Loquentur ei potentissimi robustorum de medio inferni,
qui cum auxiliatoribus ejus descenderunt,
et dormierunt incircumcisi interfecti gladio.
22
Ibi Assur, et omnis multitudo ejus:
in circuitu illius sepulchra ejus,
omnes interfecti, et qui ceciderunt gladio.
23
universi interfecti, cadentesque gladio,
qui dederant quondam formidinem in terra viventium.
24
omnes hi interfecti, ruentesque gladio,
qui descenderunt incircumcisi ad terram ultimam;
25
In medio interfectorum
posuerunt cubile ejus in universis populis ejus:
in circuitu ejus sepulchrum illius:
omnes hi incircumcisi, interfectique gladio.
26
Ibi Mosoch et Thubal, et omnis multitudo ejus:
in circuitu ejus sepulchra illius:
omnes hi incircumcisi, interfectique et cadentes gladio,
quia dederunt formidinem suam in terra viventium.
27
Et non dormient cum fortibus,
cadentibusque, et incircumcisis,
qui descenderunt ad infernum cum armis suis,
et posuerunt gladios suos sub capitibus suis,
et fuerunt iniquitates eorum in ossibus eorum:
quia terror fortium facti sunt in terra viventium.
28
Et tu ergo in medio incircumcisorum contereris,
et dormies cum interfectis gladio.
29
30
Ibi principes aquilonis omnes, et universi venatores,
qui deducti sunt cum interfectis, paventes,
et in sua fortitudine confusi:
qui dormierunt incircumcisi
cum interfectis gladio,
et portaverunt confusionem suam
cum his qui descendunt in lacum.
31
Vidit eos Pharao, et consolatus est
super universa multitudine sua,
quæ interfecta est gladio:
Pharao, et omnis exercitus ejus,
ait Dominus Deus.
32
Quia dedi terrorem meum in terra viventium,
ait Dominus Deus.
